In Arizona, we’re lucky to live in a state that’s sunny year round, but the extreme summer heat can present real challenges if we aren’t prepared. It’s important to be aware of the risk that Arizona’s summer heat poses for all Arizonans– especially vulnerable populations like unsheltered individuals, low-income families, infants and seniors. The impact is real and it’s up to all of us to protect our neighbors and families during the hot summer months.
Why the Arizona Lottery Is Taking Action
At the Arizona Lottery, we believe our responsibility extends beyond selling tickets. We prioritize strong partnerships with our fellow state agencies and communities statewide in delivering solutions that support a strong quality of life in our state. This includes doing our part to inform and protect Arizonans about the risks of extreme heat and the resources available for anyone who may need assistance.
Our mission extends beyond entertainment, we’re working for a stronger Arizona everyday. We work to maximize revenue from ticket sales to fund programs and services we all count on– strengthening education, health and human services, our economy, and the great Arizona outdoors. Investing in and promoting heat preparedness and relief resources during the hot summer months is part of this work, and aligns directly with this broader commitment to community well-being.
Harnessing our Platform and Partnerships to Save Lives
We’re partnering with the Arizona Department of Health Services this summer to distribute critical heat-safety messages through our statewide Lottery In Motion (LIM) screens—digital signage in retail locations that reach thousands of Arizonans daily. Leveraging LIM screens, at more than 3,600 retailers across Arizona, we’re providing critical heat safety information where it matters most. These screens will feature clear, direct bilingual messaging from ADHS urging Arizonans to stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay informed.
The messaging will also direct viewers to visit heat.az.gov, Arizona’s first centralized heat resource, where they can access real-time updates and find cooling centers in their communities.
The campaign will broadcast a QR code with vital information on:
-
Cooling center locations
-
Hydration and emergency assistance
-
Heat safety and prevention tips
This initiative reflects a growing recognition among public agencies that coordinated communication saves lives.
Why it All Matters
In 2023, Arizona experienced 990 heat-related deaths. This represents a significant increase from the 156 heat-related deaths reported in 2012, highlighting a concerning trend in the state. In Maricopa County alone, there were 602 confirmed heat-related deaths in 2024. Climate experts warn that heat-related deaths are likely to rise as climate change continues to intensify heatwaves. However, they are preventable if you take the proper steps and utilize the available statewide resources.
Public agencies, nonprofits, and businesses can help address this crisis. At the Arizona Lottery, we’re leveraging our visibility, partnerships, and communication networks to contribute to that collective response.
Extreme heat is not going away. Solutions must be long-term, scalable, and inclusive. The Arizona Lottery is committed to ensuring Arizonans stay safe, hydrated, and informed this summer and every summer after.
Building resilient communities isn’t just part of our mission, it’s our responsibility.
