Marketing During the Holiday Season: Strategies for Connection and Impact

By Chris Rogers, Chief Marketing Officer, Arizona Lottery

The holiday season presents one of the most complex environments for marketers, where enthusiasm, urgency, and heightened consumer expectations all converge at once. It’s a time when audiences are actively seeking solutions, inspiration, and connection, yet they are also navigating an overwhelming volume of ads and promotions. This creates a unique landscape that rewards brands not for being the loudest, but for being the most intentional. Successful holiday marketing requires more than polished visuals or timely discounts. It calls for a clear understanding of what customers value during this season and a commitment to delivering messaging that feels relevant, sincere, and grounded in purpose. Brands that succeed don’t just sell products, they build trust, create emotional connections, and leave a lasting impact beyond the season.

Shoppers are looking for more than just a deal; they are drawn to messaging that reflects the brand’s values, resonates emotionally, and tells a story. Whether it’s a philanthropic initiative, a community-focused campaign, or culturally inclusive storytelling, the campaigns that stand out are the ones that connect with people on a deeper level.

Brands like Coca-Cola have mastered holiday storytelling by centering campaigns on nostalgia and emotional connection. Their seasonal ads consistently resonate because they focus on warmth, family, and tradition rather than hard promotion.

This year our holiday campaign highlights a family who celebrates the holidays year-round and focuses on that aspect of Holiday Scratchers bringing joy and families together.

Paid media plays a critical role, but it must be approached strategically. With increased costs and crowded placements during the holidays, careful targeting and timing are essential. Smart partnerships or co-branded campaigns can extend reach efficiently, and real-time monitoring allows marketers to pivot when needed to ensure messaging resonates.

Consistency across all channels is equally important. From social media to newsletters to website content, every touchpoint should reinforce a unified holiday theme while balancing promotional content with mission-driven messaging. Ensuring accessibility and inclusion in all materials expands reach and demonstrates a commitment to every customer.

Community engagement is another key differentiator. Sponsoring events, supporting charitable initiatives, or showcasing local stories helps brands demonstrate authenticity and strengthen relationships with the communities they serve. When done naturally, these efforts enhance the overall campaign without feeling forced. Our collaborations with organizations such as Free Arts for Abused Children and Habitat for Humanity Tucson serve as excellent examples of our commitment. These partnerships allowed us to contribute to holiday initiatives within our community while consistently promoting our ongoing mission of giving back throughout the year.

Measuring the impact of holiday marketing goes beyond immediate sales. Awareness, engagement, brand sentiment, and long-term loyalty are equally important. Defining KPIs that align with organizational goals and collecting actionable insights can help inform strategies for the following year.

Finally, the work doesn’t stop after December 25. Post-holiday engagement is an opportunity to sustain momentum and nurture relationships built during the season. Follow-up campaigns, loyalty programs, and ongoing storytelling help maintain audience energy and set the stage for future success. (Could add example of post-holiday follow-up strategy)

The holiday season is a chance for brands to do more than sell. By leading with authenticity, consistency, strategic media, and community engagement, marketers can create meaningful connections that extend well beyond the season. When approached thoughtfully, holiday campaigns can leave a lasting impact, turning seasonal visibility into long-term relationships.
